我們通常不會把罪惡視為短處，但是當我們有這種概念時，我們會把罪惡局限於個人的缺點或疏忽，那就是說，沒有達到必需的標準，例如不用功讀書，對長者不尊敬，沒有參加主日感恩祭， 或間中沒有幫助貧苦的人等等。但是，大家有沒有留意到今天的福音催促我們超越文化的規範，宗教的法律或追求完美的理想，而集中注意基督教義道德的中心(愛的誡命)呢？  個人的缺點或疏忽，在基督徒的意念中，就是沒有實踐對天主子女施展愛德工作。

We rarely think of evil as shortcoming, and when we do we limit it to personal fault or neglect, as failing below some obligatory standard; such as not studying seriously, disrespectful to elders, and failing to attend Sunday mass, occasionally not sharing with the poor, etc. Note, however, how today's gospel urges us to go beyond the narrow focus on cultural norm or religious law or perfectionist ideal, in order to center on the moral heart of Christianity which is the commandment of love. Personal fault or neglect in the Christian sense is about failure to be loving persons and to do loving deeds as befits those who believe in one family under God.

Furthermore today's gospel invites us to see the implications of personal neglect at a larger level. For it is in light of social interaction that all it needs for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Neglect is doing nothing with the talents entrusted by the king who went on a journey. It is the charge Jesus lays against those who, unlike the Samaritan, avoided the man fallen among robbers. It is solidarity withheld from the poor man at the gates of our lavish celebrations and lifestyles. Put differently, if Jesus is Everyman who is in need, then He is the neighbor who is our savior or our judge. In ways never anticipated, our salvation or condemnation is in our neighbor's hands.
